What we did...
... create a new voice in rugby. In 2017, Sporting Eric launched a new editorial brand telling rich stories from the world of rugby. Focused on big reads (each feature is upwards of 3,000 words) in a collectable coffee-table journal and using stunning bespoke photography and illustration, Rugby Journal was the first of its kind in the sport and truly broke the mould. It covers everything from intimate interviews with the game’s biggest names right down to the incredible stories of rugby’s grassroots clubs and everything in-between.
In addition to the quarterly print title, there’s also therugbyjournal.com – which includes a bespoke section on sevens; Rugby Photographer of the Year, which culminates in an exhibition at Twickenham’s World Rugby Museum; a monthly e-newsletter and social channels on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
What happened...
Rugby Journal has now won best sport and health magazine at the prestigious British Society of Magazine Editors awards for two years’ running and is also the PPA’s best independent consumer title. Its long-form editorial guarantees longer reading in print (just under an hour per sitting) and also market-leading page reading times (up to 11 minutes average on certain articles and around five minutes across the site).
