Brian Moore pinpoints women’s game as the future of rugby

In issue 12 of Rugby Journal, former England and British & Irish Lions hooker Brian Moore highlighted the need for a focus on the women’s game to grow rugby as a whole.

In a wide-ranging interview with Rugby Journal, 64-cap ex-England hooker and BBC pundit Brian Moore shared his views on how the RFU should look to expand the game. “Rugby’s medium- and long-term future depends on women,” he said. “Rugby has been trying as hard as it can, and you’ve only made a certain dent in the number of young boys playing rugby. Even if you could increase the amount of money you put in with development officers by ten times the amount, you’d then only make a reasonable dent in what football’s getting.

“Whereas, in girl’s sport, football’s got a march, but they’re not as far ahead,” he continued. “If you could match every boy at mini rugby with a girl, instead of being 1:10, if you got that down to 1:1, you’ve got ten times more people in the game. This is the answer.”

Also, in the interview covering ten pages of the coffee-table journal, Brian discusses his struggles with a life after rugby; being a dad to four girls; rugby’s inability to deal with the professional era; and his House of Lords’ ambition.

Issue 12 is still available to buy and also features exclusives with Beno Obano, Joe and Sam Simmonds, All Blacks scrum guru Mike Cron, Giselle Mather, Tamara Taylor, World Rugby’s global head of the women’s game Katie Sadleir, and stories on rugby in Lebanon and Morocco.
