Rugby Photographer of the Year 2023 with Canterbury

Rugby Journal’s annual search for the best photography in the world of rugby has been launched in partnership with iconic rugby brand Canterbury.

In 2022, Rugby Photographer of the Year attracted entries from more than 600 photographers around the world, with winners of the six categories coming from Uganda, Spain, USA and the UK – Australian Rachel Wright captured the first prize of £1,000 with her image from the Queensland Premier Rugby Hospital Cup Grand Final between University of Queensland and GPS Rugby Club. All of the shortlisted entries also appeared in an exhibition that is still running at the World Rugby Museum, Twickenham.

This year, the shortlisted entrants will once again feature in an exhibition at the World Rugby Museum, with a £1,000 cash prize offered to the overall winner together with a full set of Canterbury teamwear, to be donated to a team of the winner's choice.

Jack Richardson, Canterbury Brand Director, said: “At Canterbury we are all about engaging with every level of the rugby community, telling the stories that make our game so distinctive all over the world. We’re delighted to be sponsoring Rugby Photographer of the Year 2023, celebrating those who capture the spirit and passion of the game through photography.”

Alex Mead, Editor-in-Chief of Rugby Journal, said: “Partnering with a global rugby brand such as Canterbury reflects the growing stature of Rugby Photographer of the Year.
“Last year we had entries from across the world, and the exhibition at the World Rugby Museum reflects the competition’s unique ability to paint a vivid picture of the global rugby landscape.”

The winner will be announced at an event at the World Rugby Museum, Twickenham, on Wednesday 6th September, 2023.

Open to amateur and professional photographers who cover any level of the game, from grassroots to elite, minis to vets, there are once again six categories: Portrait, Landscape, Action, Spirit of Rugby, Portfolio and Young Photographer of the Year (aged 17 and under).

Entry is open now, and closes at 11.59pm on Friday 11th August, 2023.
