Sporting Eric will complete a rugby double later this year when it publishes a commemorative hardback book telling the story of Cambridge University RUFC.

The comprehensive history of Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club will be released in October this year, bringing together some of the biggest names in rugby to tell the story of one of the sport’s oldest clubs.

A limited-edition hardback, the book is edited by Rob Cole, featuring contributions from the likes of David Hands, Brendan Gallagher, Peter Jackson and Iain Morrison, and tells the story from the very origins back in 1871 through to the modern day, covering the war-time heroes, the free-running seventies, the days of sell-outs at Twickenham and everything in between. A comprehensive statistics section will also include full lists of men’s and women’s Blues.

“The story of Cambridge University RUFC has never been told to this level,” explains Jeremy Macklin of Cambridge University RUFC, “so the 150th anniversary gave us the perfect opportunity to bring together some incredible storytellers to bring to life the many historic moments in the club’s history. In Rob [Cole] and Sporting Eric, we’ve got the perfect team to deliver a very special, commemorative book which I know is going to be highly prized by anyone that owns a copy.”

In publishing the book, Sporting Eric also completes a unique double, having last year published the limited-edition hardback book celebrating 150 years of Cambridge’s arch-rivals Oxford. Nick Mallett, Richard Sharp, Princess Obolensky, Lord Butler of Brockwell, David Kirk, Sue Day and Simon Halliday were among those to share their Oxford stories.

“We’ve been working closely with both sides and The Varsity Match for the past four years through our work with their sponsor Rhino, so we feel privileged to be telling their incredible stories,” says Alex Mead, Sporting Eric’s managing director. “The Cambridge tale is a rich one, and the team of writers has done a wonderful job, unearthing some real gems that are going to appeal to not only those with a passion for Cambridge University rugby, but rugby fans in general.”
