Rugby Journal given the nod in four categories for the 2021 BSME Awards
Rugby Journal has become the first title to be shortlisted in four categories at the prestigious British Society of Magazine Editors awards.
In what is the first year the Sporting Eric-owned title has been eligible the Rugby Journal – launched three years ago – has been shortlisted in the Sport, Fitness and Health; Independent; Art Director and Cover of the Year categories.
The shortlisting sees the quarterly title ranked alongside the likes of Women’s Health, The Cricketer, Wired, Empire, The Sunday Times Magazine and New Statesman.
Among the shortlisted entries was our issue 8 cover featuring the ‘mud only’ wheelie bin of Chinnor RFC. “It’s not every day that the wheelie bin from a grassroots rugby club gets to compete on the national stage,” says Alex Mead, Sporting Eric’s managing director and Editor-in-Chief of Rugby Journal. “We’ve had a huge year with Rugby Journal, launching Rugby Photographer of the Year, a dedicated online sevens section, and also our Rugby in Lockdown webinar series, so to have that acknowledged with four BSME nominations means a lot to the team. We designed Rugby Journal with big reads in mind, every story is at least 3,000 words long, illustrated with bespoke imagery using photographers beyond the world of sport, so hopefully this means we’re doing something right.”
Rugby Journal is part of Sporting Eric’s magazine and print portfolio that includes MCC Magazine and Golf Society, together with programmes for New Zealand Rugby, ICC Cricket World Cup and hardback books for Oxford University and Cambridge University.
